Non-electric starter powers success for OEM

December 2016

OEM has successfully delivered a safety critical ‘black start’ hydraulic system to a North Sea operator ensuring its asset in the UK Continental Shelf was able to meet HSE regulations and remain operational. This type of non-electric powered kit is required as a backup solution in environments such as offshore platforms where electrical power may be unsuitable to power safety equipment.

The Aberdeen-headquartered firm, which specialises in starter systems, diesel products, fuel conditioning, engine and electrical services, was able to source and deliver the self-contained equipment in just four days.

OEM Group managing director Barry Park said: “Black start engines are used in safety critical industries mainly as a plan B to electrical or mechanical motors. They provide a safe start when operating emergency equipment such as fire pumps and power generation is compromised.

“Our client was in a tight spot and came to us because they’d discovered that they didn’t have the luxury of the usual 10 to 12 weeks for this item to be ordered in. We were able to source the kit and deliver it within just four days allowing them to carry on with their operations and prevent any potentially disastrous power failures on the installation.”
